Intern - Transportation & Bicycle Safety (Transportation)

position will remain open until filled.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position assists the department with essential functions such
as traffic counts, and traffic studies, along with bicycle,
pedestrian, and transit-related work. This position also has the
responsibility of educating the community on bicycle and pedestrian
safety and promoting and evaluating the bikeways for maintenance
and repairs.
The position is for the summer months from the middle of May
through the middle of August and is based on a 35-hour work week
that consists of Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Flexibility
in the scheduling is required to account for staffing at other
various events over the summer including occasional weekend and
evening events.
JOB DUTIES:
1. Manages the research and implementation of studies as directed
by department staff.
2. Assists with traffic-related activities that may include but are
not limited to performing traffic counts, monitoring traffic
signals, and conducting traffic studies.
3. Inspects the over 95 miles of bike paths and lanes to evaluate
the condition and maintenance needs of the system. Includes the
inspection and reporting of regulatory signs that are faded,
missing, or tilted, deteriorated bike paths or lanes, and tree or
shrub obstructions encroaching into the bikeway riding area.
Deficiencies will be reported to the appropriate department for
maintenance, and a detailed daily log of completed activities will
also be completed.
4. Educates the community on bicycle safety and bicycle traffic
laws, assists with the administration of bicycle safety programs
and events, and distributes bicycle maps and other bicycle-related
information to various locations throughout the community.
5. Participates in various bike events over the summer such as bike
to work day, Fahrrad tour von Schaumburg, walk/bike to school day
events, national night out, Septemberfest, farmer's market, and the
public library. At these events, staff responsibilities include
handing out information on bicycle and pedestrian safety,
distributing bicycle and transit maps, registering bicycles, and
answering questions from the public.
6. Works on transits-related activities that may include collecting
and analyzing ridership, operating related statistics, performing
qualitative and quantitative field tests, monitoring transit
services including the Woodfield Trolley, Dial-A-Ride
Transportation (DART), planning Septemberfest Special Event
Services, and distributing brochures to various locations
throughout the community.
7. Researches, produces, and performs public presentations to
village committees, civic groups, and the public.
8. Supports department staff with various other functions.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
2. In the process of obtaining an associate's, bachelor's, or
master's degree in political science, urban planning, civil
engineering, public administration, or a related field.
3. Possession of a valid driver's license with transportation to
and from inspection sites.
4. Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific
software, and customer service systems.
PAY RATE: $29.96 per hour based on a 35-hour workweek.
